One Step at a Time

Being Content

Have you ever really wanted something and then woke up the next day and had it? Yeah, me neither. I can’t snap my fingers and get what I want. But, how cool would it be to be able to get what you want, right away! What would you want? Would you want to change something about your present? Go back to the past and relive a moment? Or just get a new wardrobe? Well, whatever it may be, it can’t happen by the snap of your fingers! Sorry, there’s no infinity stones here! ( Okay, if you didn’t get that reference, we can’t be friends…just kidding, I’ll just teach you!) Why don’t we take it one step at a time and just try being content?
I’m not here to tell you that there is a way to have everything you want. And I’m not here to tell you that God will give you everything you want. I’m definitely not here to give you false hope. What I am here for is to bring you content.

If my toddler can do it, you can do it..

The other day, I was watching my son, literally, just sitting there watching him, wondering what was going on in that wittle brain of his. Just about a month ago I remember him taking a step all by

himself. ONE step! Such a proud moment for this mama! Then, next thing I know, I’m sitting here watching him walk all over his room, from pulling his Simba and Super-Bear out of his toy basket to taking each and every book off of his shelf. Yes, his room was a mess, but no, I didn’t care. I, then, sat there thinking how amazing it is that my son went from one scary-wobbly step to a bunch of bear-like steps! You know how he did it? One step at a time. Just one. I think we need to remember this about or lives.

If there is something that we want in our lives, we have to take it one step at a time, even if it’s baby steps! We have to work hard and not give up in order to achieve what we are yearning for. See, my son didn’t just jump out of bed one morning and start walking everywhere. No, he took it day by day, step by step. We have to do this too.

Real Talk

Nothing is handed to us, unless it is handed to us by God, but only in God’s timing. You may want something now; maybe a new job, a new house, or to learn something new? However, sitting on the couch thinking about what you want isn’t going to help you get it. And dreading all day long about not having it isn’t going to help either! If anything, it’s just going to prolong the process AND make you feel bleh! Even if it is God’s will, most of the time YOU still need to take action.

God won’t apply to that job for you, but may keep pushing you towards it. He won’t buy that house for you, but may have you denied for a loan on a house that wasn’t right for you. God will lead you, though you must take the steps it requires. Sometimes there are so many steps that it may take days, months, or even years to get where you want to get. But in between all those steps, be content.

“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”

Matthew 6:34

I bet you can count five things you have that others may not have. I can; a television, cell phone, laptop, shoes, and a bed. There, five things. How BLESSED am I to have these five things! There are some people out there who don’t have a bed to sleep on at night, or are taking steps to get a bed. Right now, I consider myself blessed to be where I am in life right now. On the good days and the bad days, and trust me, there are definitely bad days! However, I am still thankful and content.

Take Action

Every night before bed, when I am praying with my son, we always thank God for 3 specific things: (1) food in our belly, (2) clothes on our back, and (3) the roof over our head. If you have these three things, I’d say you’re pretty darn blessed and able to be content. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have dreams and goals, because YES, you should! Have that desire! That’s great! Dream about the future, just don’t get stuck in that dream and miss out on the reality in front of you. Your children, your pets, your significant other. Whatever it may be, enjoy what you have right now.

Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!

Habakkuk 3:17-19

Trust in God’s timing. If there is something that you want, and it’s God’s will, then it will be done. But, it has to be on God’s timing. Have faith in him, because he keeps his promises. Be content in where God placed you right now. Maybe there is something God wants you to do in that city you want to leave so bad, or maybe there is an employee you’re supposed to befriend at that job you dislike so much. Or, maybe where God wants to place you in the future just isn’t ready for you, YET.

Be Content

Above all else, have content where you are. Have peace where you are. Show God you trust him by believing in his timing and plan. If you need help on being content, pray to Jesus and ask for patience, guidance, and peace.

Now, I encourage you to say hi to that woman at church that’s been catching your eye lately, or take your children to the local neighborhood park, even if it’s not the best, or ask your boss if there is anything specific they need help with this week.

Above all that, be content with the Lord. Because He is all we need and He will not forsake us. Finally, trust that everything will come together, in God’s timing.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.
