How To Be More Christlike – Philippians 2

Rolling the Dice by Grumbling

Ugh, don’t us MOMS just do EVERYTHING?! We cook, we clean, we take care of the kids! It’s so darn exhausting but we still do it! I don’t want to do the dishes 3 times a day but I do anyway, I mean, who else is going to do them?? Of course vacuuming every day can be tiresome! … Wow, well that didn’t seem very Christlike at all, right? Are you wanting to be more Christlike? Me too! Maybe we’ve got some work to do!

Are you rolling the dice by grumbling? Are you hindering your relationship with the Lord because of your constant complaining? And you know it’s not good, but you keep doing it anyway? Well, put those dice down and stop gambling your Faith!

In Philippians, Paul discusses how grumbling and complaining are not Godly attributes. We are to be children of God, to shine like the stars, therefore we need to do things out of love and kindness. Doing things out of love and kindness means not complaining when we do them, or even after. If we can accomplish this task, on an everyday basis, then we can be one step further into our Christlike behavior.

Do everything without grumbling or arguing

Philippians 2:14

Grumbling by Definition

Grumbling, in simple terms, is complaining. Different translations of the Bible use different words such as: murmuring, complaining, disputing, and so on. However, they all mean the same thing and Paul’s advice means the same no matter which translation you read. Don’t complain, don’t complete an act of service while grumbling about it. Yay, you took out the trash, but you grumbled about it every step of the way. How does that show God’s humility?

We’re All Human

This is one of the biggest things I struggle with, in terms of wanting to be more Christlike. I have an issue with complaining. It’s okay if you do too, we are all only human. That being said, God gave us Jesus as an example. He lived just like we do, and he was sinless. Jesus didn’t grumble; he didn’t complain when everyone kept crowding him, he didn’t complain when he had to change the water into wine, and he didn’t complain when he sacrificed his life for us.

It’s okay if you struggle with this, let’s struggle together, but let’s also strive together to imitate Christ’s humility to the fullest. Each day let’s try to complain less. Each chore we do, each dish we wash, one less complaint. That’s one step closer to being more Christlike.

So that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.

Philippians 2:15-16

Not Of This World

We need to remember why we are doing what we are doing on this earth. We are children of God, everything we do is for Him. He gave us this life, to worship him and to share His love with our neighbors. Do you think we show God’s love when we grumble all the time? Do you think His love is just shining out of us while we complain about having to pick up our husbands socks off the floor… again?

Of course not, that’s not going to get someone excited to learn about the Lord, that’s not going to make someone feel comfortable enough to ask you a question about God. That’s going to hinder that relationship; that relationship with a stranger, that relationship with a family member, and that relationship with Jesus. Now, I don’t want that and I’m sure you don’t either.

But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.

We Got This-Because God Has Us

Be More Christlike

I encourage you today, to make it a goal to not complain for one whole day! It may be easy for some of you, but it may be more difficult for others. You’re definitely going to have to think before you speak. (Yes, more tiresome stuff to do.. :p) But, this will even help you gain confidence and be more secure with yourself!

I know you probably grumble about yourself too! You may even complain about yourself more than anything else, your hair, your skin, your clothes. Whatever it is, I encourage you to stop grumbling about yourself as well, because you are God’s! He made you the way you are and he loves you.

So, starting now, for the rest of the day, don’t complain! Then, begin again tomorrow morning when you wake up! Next thing you know a week will have gone by and you will feel great, not even have realized that you didn’t complain about yourself or anyone else! This will bring us one step closer to being more Christlike! Let’s stop rolling the dice by grumbling! Our Faith is not a game!
